THE RUN/WALK

November 11, 2007

On a crisp November morning with emotions running high our committee hoped for another successful Run with Dennis Event.   People began arriving early and they too brought new emotions and energy.
In keeping with Veteran’s Day and to honor all who served, the committee provided red, white, blue and yellow ribbons to be worn by veterans and active duty military.  Each one proudly displayed these ribbons on their uniforms, shirts or jackets.  Initially a high ranking Commander in the United States Navy advised that she could not wear the ribbon.  But seeing the response, she changed her mind and asked Dennis’ mom to pin it on her uniform.  Dennis’ mom was so thankful to her, not only for her service, but for her willingness to support our event.   The assembled group was asked to specifically thank those wearing the ribbons for their service to our country.  Sgt. Peter Springer, a soldier in Dennis’ unit, who flew in from California for the event, said, “It felt great!  Five people thanked me for my service.  No one had ever done that before.”  These ribbons will become part of our annual run.  What better way to thank those who give so much and ask for so little.
The New Jersey State Police Blue and Gold Bagpipers made an appearance and played during the pre-ceremony.
The ceremony opened with the presentation of the colors by the veterans of the VFW Post 2179, Middletown, NJ.  The singing of our National Anthem by USO Troop of Metro New York brought many people to tears.  The crowd’s silence was almost deafening as they watched and listened.  These two groups set the stage for a meaningful opening ceremony.
In his opening remarks, Lt. Tim Mahoney, Ret. NJ State Police reminded the runners/walkers of why we were there and what the run/walk is about.  In his closing remarks he challenged everyone to bring one extra person with them next year, a challenge that will be met by newcomers who said that they will spread the word about the event and will bring someone with them for our 2008 Run with Dennis.
Col. Randy George, United States Army delivered the most powerful message of the day.    He explained, “I am thankful that we have a day, - Veteran’s Day-, that is set aside to reflect on how many great American troopers have carried our Nation through changes, helping us to stay our course with resilience.  It is their example that can be a moral rally point for all of us.  Our young men and women in uniform remind us that a full life is found in serving something greater, certainly someone other than ourselves.  They remind us that freedom must be fiercely protected for it will endure only with a personal and profound effort from each of us.  Dennis’ example constantly reminds me of my obligations as I continue my own personal journey through life.”  (See his entire speech in the insert.)
A presentation was made to Capt. Dan Downs, United States Army.  For those that attended the first run, they remembered that Dan (a good friend and fellow swimmer of Dennis’ at West Point) attended the run confined to a wheel chair after being wounded in Iraq.  Dan was in constant danger of losing his leg, but through hard work and dedication he attended the run this year and was walking.  Because Dan exemplified Dennis’ virtues he was presented with a signed football from the New York Giants.  How awesome is that now, that they are the Super Bowl Champions?
Following the benediction by Pastor Scott Harris of the Middletown Reformed Church, the runners/walkers were dismissed to warm up.  Some needed more warming up than others.   Spirits ran high for the accomplished runners, while those less accomplished attempted to complete the run/walk.
The run started and was escorted by the State Police Motorcycle Unit as they led the Men’s and Women’s Swim of United States Military Academy, West Point.   Coach Mickey Wender ran the race pushing his two young children in a stroller.  The crowds cheered the cadets as they started up the first of many hills and then again when they came down the first hill.  The runners were at the start line geared up and ready to break loose.  Young and old with faces covered in bright smiles and infectious spirits started the course.
Two airmen from the United States Air Force made the run, attired in full gear with full ruck sacks in honor of Dennis and to show the community the sacrifice that they are willing to make on our behalf.
Shortly after the runners left, the walkers then approached the start line.  Words can not describe the euphoria that existed with the cheers and chants from the walkers.  They were all having fun.
Time would tell who was ready for this event.  Amidst the growing pains of the challenging courses facial expressions changed from cheers to thankfulness and pride as the runners and walkers met their own personal challenges and completed the event.
The run has been lovingly coined “The Ranger Run” because everyone knows the challenges that are met by our men in uniform.
After the run/walk a post race reception was served by Carrabba’s of Middletown and music for everyone’s listening enjoyment was provided by Thom White and the Rogues.  It is amazing to watch the workers from Carrabba’s prepare and serve so many and so well.  If you are looking for a great place to eat with cheerful service, please go to Carrabba’s and thank them for supporting Run with Dennis.
The run/walk for 2008 is scheduled for Sunday, November 9.  Try your luck at this challenging course.  Accept Lt. Mahoney’s challenge and bring someone new to the event this year.

Through the help of donors and participants we join together in helping our wounded soldiers and their families when they return from active duty.  We hope we can count on you attending this year’s event.  See you with your running/walking shoes on!

The 2nd Annual Lt Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial 3.5 Mile Run/2mile Walk Committee, would like to express their sincere gratitude to all those who supported our event. On Veteran’s Day, 11-11-07 over 1200 people came together at the PNC Bank Arts Center, in Holmdel, to honor the memory of Lt Dennis W. Zilinski II and pay tribute to all our Veterans and military personnel. LT. Zilinski grew up in Middletown, attended CBA and the United States Military Academy at West Point and on November 19, 2005, Lt. Dennis Zilinski was killed as a result of a roadside bombing near Bayji, Iraq. In an act of love, the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II Memorial Fund has been established by his friends and family to provide various forms of assistance to wounded service members, and to support an academic scholarship at Dennis’ high school.
We would like to thank all the runners and walkers who gave it their best effort on a challenging and hilly course throughout the Arts Center property.  The support of our sponsors has been tremendous and we thank Investors Savings Bank, Durso Financial Group of Wachovia Securities, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Randy and Maureen MacDonald, Lawes Oil/Lawes Environmental, Dardin Fund, PNC Bank, Red Bank Title Agency, St. Ann Catholic Church of Kentucky, Quentin & Ellen Walsh, Poland Springs Water, Glaceau Vitamin Water, and Vic Gerard Golf Carts. Our post race reception was provided by Carrabba’s of Middletown whose Proprietor, Jerilyn Rembisz, has generously sponsored this for two years. Starbuck’s of Red Bank was with us again this year providing much needed coffee at 7am! Thom White and The Rogues played great music and entertained everyone as they ate and mingled with the many Veterans who attended our event. We could not have accomplished any of this if we did not have the best volunteers! Thank you to all 189 of you!! A special thanks to the CBA community, The United States Military Academy Cadets,  Monmouth County Command Center, MONOC, New Jersey National Guard, New Jersey State Police Troop “E”, New Jersey Turnpike Authority, New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial,  Middletown Twp.
